March 24, 2007: Oddments

This is a picture of my coffee cup from Starbucks. In order to make sure the right person gets the right drink, the staff write one's family name on the cup, for example Lin (林) or Chen (陳). To show that the drink belongs to that person, they add an apotrophe-s ('s). This is easier than writing the character 'de' (的) which is the equivalent of apostrophe-s. As a foreigner, it's much easier for the staff to write "foreigner's", which is "wei gou ren de" (外國人的), shortened to 外's. Which I think is pretty hilarious!

A couple of weeks ago I was in the new Sogo and discovered a boutique for dogs. Yes, you can bring your dog to the store and have different outfits tried on your little 'Booboo.' The staff are ever so friendly and the little outfits are ever so expensive. But, it must be admitted, cute.
